Look at both of these Opus X cigar bands. Both are the real thing, but the band on the left shows a curious blackening of the gold leaf on the Opus X logo.

If you see a band like this, it is very good evidence that the cigar has suffered water damage, either by a direct water spill, or extended over-humidification. Water causes the gold leaf to oxidize, and turn black. Note that the band is discolored in other areas as well.

If you see a cigar with a blackened gold leaf band, beware, because it very likely has suffered water damage that will affect the cigar as well.
