Our nuclear arsenal has been the greatest guarantee of our national security for 65 years and probably the number one reason that the US and the other major military powers around the world have avoided direct armed conflict between themselves for that period - a period of time that is unprecedented in at least the last 1000 years.

I think I am pretty well known around here to be a major dove - but the reason I can afford to be a dove is because I know that our security is guaranteed as long as we can blow the entire planet to smithereens if anyone ever really fucked with us.

So can someone please explain to me why we are now voluntarily and irreversibly destroying 34 TONS of this nuclear material that has protected our ass for 65 years and which we spent billions of dollars to produce???

We tend to get rid of aging nuclear munitions through attrition. If they are smart they will be destroying the stuff that has degraded or the munitions that require too much money to be cost effective to repair. Now I don't know how much of a total arsenal we have, but I'd bet it is still enough to take care of any and all threats. This is just a guess on my part. I mean how many times can you destroy your enemies?

That being said, if he was planning on getting ride of the stuff, don't do it whole sale without conditions. He should have negotiated some stuff with Russia like not giving Chavez military hardware. Or even with China to support sanctions against Iran. Even with North Korea, he could have tried some deal.

One Ohio class sub is the 10th largest nuclear power in the world. I have a feeling that we will still have plenty.

Besides, what good is a treaty when shit hits the fan?

What an incredibly interesting comment. Too bad the TOTUS doesn't understand that...

Never too many times.

BTW, I think this all harkens back to the 2008 Presidential campaign when Obama told Joe the Nuclear Scientist:

"It's not that I want to punish America's success. I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind us, that they've got a chance at nukes, too… My attitude is that if nukes are available for countries from the bottom up, it’s gonna be good for everybody. I think when you spread the nukes around, it’s good for everybody."

Not me. As much as Obama sucks, I would STILL vote for him over McLame/Palin.

If the Pubes give us a Romney, a Palin, or that ilk, I'll hold my nose and vote for Obama again.

They they give us a Huckabee or a Ron Paul, I'll vote GOP.

If they give us a Pawlenty . . . I'll have to think about it.

Yep. I figure no matter how many they "give away" there will be several floating around or hidden that will actually be a deterrent or revenge depending on the situation. At the end of the day, I hope I am not wrong and I do believe in giving peace a chance.

Unfortunately, the world is full of those who don't believe in that sentiment.

Yes I know. Still doesn't change the way I try to live my life, which is ultimately all I can really control.
