Can someone help me out or give me the rundown on The Macallan and their new offerings vs. the standard 12, 18, 25 year and so on.
I was in a duty free shop last week and wanted to pick up a bottle of the 18 year, but it was not offered. Instead what was offered are different grades depending on how the whisky has been aged. The guy working explained to me that the 12, 18, 25 etc. are not offered anymore, and this is how they will be doing it from here on out. He also gave me a small pamphlet about the new Scotches as well.
Was he full of shit, or is this accurate? My first thought was that perhaps in certain countries of at duty free shops you can only get certain bottlings.

Macallan has two main lines: the Sherry oak (this was the old standard) and the Fine Oak. The Sherry Oak still has the 10 yr (not usually seen in the USA), 12, 18, 25 & 30 year old. The Fine Oak (mixed casks, some seasoned with sherry & some with bourbon) comes in 10 yr, 15, 21 & 30. For duty free they created the 1824 Collection: Select Oak, Whisky Maker's Edition & Estate Reserve. None of those have age statements, so that's probably what the guy there was talking about. The others are still made but probably no longer being sold at duty free.

Thanks for the info. I wish I had known to research that better before I left.

Do you recall the prices for the 1824 Collection? What duty free were you at?

Sorry, I don't. This was in Cozumel, at one of the cruise piers. I didn't see it in Grand Cayman as well.
What I did find was a good price on HC7 though...
